christchurch - hokitika

Published on 05/12/2011 on nsmz

Assalammualaikum. Bismillah.

So I'm back from my trip to NZ. We were there for 10 days, very tiring heheh. We missed spring, but it's not even summer yet, kind of... in between?

It's also my first time with AirAsiaX, because we don't normally take AirAsia for long hauls. Turns up AirAsiaX was okay, so after this no more MAS?

I guess I should be writing bout the trip from Christchurch to Hokitika now, eh? No one wants to hear my ramblings about AirAsia and MAS.

20th Nov 2011

We arrived at Christchurch International airport around 11 or 12 at night. Yeaaaaaaaaah. Decided to stay at Christchurch for a night, and then we'll continue our road trip on the next day.

Stayed at Airport Lodge Motel . Before you start saying things, the motels here are NOT like the ones in Malaysia. They picked us up at the airport. The motel is quite okay, even TripAdvisor recommended it. We took one 'Studio' and '1 Bedroom', refer below:
Studio - Sleeps up to 2 people
From NZ$120.00
1 Bedroom - Sleeps up to 4 people
From NZ$130.00
 21st Nov 2011

Airport Lodge Motel. It was raining.

After we're done with breakfast, packing and all, Abah and Bulik Ami went to get the car. Uh actually it's not a car, it's more of a van. We planned to use our own Garmin, which I've downloaded the NZ map in it, but it wouldn't work. The thing keeps saying 'Acquiring satellites'. So we rented a Navman from the car rent. Anyway, if you want to go to NZ, you might wanna try to download this - maybe it'll work for you. It didn't work for me though.

And so we hit the road to Hokitika. But it keeps raining and raining and raining. Oh before that we went to a grocery mart called Countdown to buy food, and also a bakery near the mart. Their bread is freakin' delicious. It's located in a... it's like a shopping mall but it's slightly smaller... something like that, I don't know what it's called. It's very near to the motel.

Along the journey to Hokitika.

Stopped by at Castle Hill, where Narnia was filmed. So Narnia fans must go here okay! I'm not.

Faiz trying to read.

As we reached our destination, which is Beachside Motel, we performed our Solat and then we explored the small town of Hokitika. It's very quiet, unlike KL.

Beachside Motel, Hokitika.

The remote town of Hokitika. Jade Factory.Com at the back, very expensive.

Custom House near the ocean. Very windy.

Hokitika Gorge, 30 mins from town. Supposedly, the water should be turquoise but because of the rain, it turned grey.

Swing bridge, 10 mins from the car park.

Feeding the Weka, Hokitika Gorge.

On the way back. Looks like marshmallow, eh? It's grass, actually.

We had dinner at the motel, my two aunts were in charge of the cooking. Got mussels for dinner.

Went to the Glow-Worm Dell after dinner. You'll find this sign as on your left as you enter Hokitika (if you're from Christchurch). Just around walking distance from the motel. If you wanna go here, bring a torchlight or you'll be stumbling along the railings. Two minutes walk from the entrance. It's very very dark, kinda spooky but you can see the glow worms clearly. They're like fireflies... but they're worms.

And that's the end for the day.

I'll write about the next day soon, Insya-Allah.
